Orpheus looked at his familiar, then back to Khailyn, and gave a small smile. "Merryl has no need of a spell to make her braver. That will just end in disaster."
The cat purred on his shoulder, and Orpheus picked up another one at random. He recognised the parts that referred to fire, but nothing else really. He pushed his hand through the complex patterns, muttering under his breath. His tiredness was being replaced by curiosity rather rapidly.
Merryl yelled out and jumped on his hand as a flame flickered, turning into a little fairy made of magic and fire. She started playing with it and Orpheus smiled shyly at Khailyn, "Sorry. Curiosity killed the cat, eh?"

Khailyn gasps quietly at the splendour of the faerie, so pretty and delicate... "Well that's what I said earlier" she replies in response to Orpheus's comment "But you see---" Oh right, of course. Orpheus wasn't aware Merryl wasn't a real cat... "Err, well, I didn't want to offend her or anything" She smiles simply and nods, looking back to the pre-occupied Merryl... She seemed pretty cat like to Khai...
"How did you do that? That's real magic. Not the stuff I can I do, I mean, you know real, genuine sorcery!"

He responded to Khailyn with a kind smile, "Don't worry about Merryl, she's tough."
Orpheus shrugged, explaining, "I'm blessed, even amongst our kind. Some priests may be better than me, but I've always been able to cast really without thinking too much about it." He indicated the spells.
"I ask the spirits, and if they deem me worthy by our Angel, then magic is granted to me." He tried to simplify the matter as best he could, though did not really wish to dwell on the matter too long. "What magic can you do?" He asked politely.

"Oh... It's not magic" Khailyn blushes, averting her glance some place else. "Hmm" She says, and directs her gaze to a stray piece of note paper. Within a few seconds the paper is raised into the air and torn in half, an action seemingly carried out by no one. The two halves float down like feathers, settling once again on the table.
Khai smiles delightedly at the Elf. "Not many people, humans, can do that" She insists. It wasn't quite as grand as a faerie made of fire and magic, but for a mere mortal it was pretty impressive. Khai looks at Orpheus with some concern, he seemed pale, drained even. Perhaps it was the spell he had cast...
"Hey. You OK?"

Orpheus was impressed. Where was the spell? It was as if Khailyn had merely willed to rip the paper. There was no request, no granting, merely her ability to bend existance to her purpopse. His twilight blue eyes held a new respect for the woman.
At her quetsion, he smiled grimly, "I had a debt to repay." Not exactly the best explaination, so Orpheus told his tale.
"I cast myself into servitude when I first came here, to a Goddess Khellesi. So to free myself, I had to find a suitable replacement. A vampire called Lillith fashioned me with the information I needed, and tonight she claimed back her favour."
He sighed, feeling that tiredness rushing back. Orpheus yawned. "I must be boring you to death if I'm yawning at my own story. Anyway, she's had her dinner off me. Not the nicest thing I can admit to partaking in." Orpheus smiled at Khailyn kindly.

Khailyn is delighted to have pleased him with her little demonstration. She is somewhat excited to have impressed him... perhaps her little cover up for gathering information on the elf was not exactly miles from the truth...
Khai listens intently to his answer, the name Khellesi sparking some memory, having read it once or twice in historical documents... Impressive that a Goddess was so involved with humanity, not distant or detached as some... Khai nods respectively when Orpheus is finished explaining. All this about debts, Vampires, servitude and Goddesses... There was a lot of information about this guy Khai had failed to obtain! The cult would want to know... and of Merryl too... They would surely punish her for not sharing the knowledge... But Khai didn't want to betray her friends, and that's exactly what these two were becoming...
She sighs, clutching at her pony tail. "You are a free ma-- err, Elf now though, Orpheus. It would appear that this does not come without a price..."

Orpheus nodded grimly. "Who knows what now that creature can do with my blood inside her?" But he was thinking on other things, how Khailyn had spoken.
"You speak as if you are not free. What ties you here then? I stay because I know of no way out, and I am compelled by my heart. You seem to answer to no master, what is it?"

Khailyn cannot decide whether to laugh or cry hysterically at his last statement... Instead she simply does nothing, staring vacantly at the table as if caught in some emotional limbo. There was no use anymore, Khailyn was here in the most wondrous but stifling of places... The lack of sun was depressing, but the antics of the Gothic city were fascinating, she really had nothing to loose anymore...
Khai takes a very long, deep breath... "Orpheus, I'm not in love with you, I never was. I didn't mean to lie to you but, you see, I had to gather information on you because you are part of a world that my masters are very... interested in... I'm actually an involuntary member of a horrid vicious cult who would mean to kill you eventually, once I, me, Khailyn Adelaide had obtained enough information about you..." She pauses, breathing hard and fast. "...and your cat" Khai adds hesitantly, eyes full of shame and tears, but she will not let them fall. The truth was out at long last, the Elf and his familiar could decide how they would take it, but Khailyn would lie to them no more...

Orpheus didn't know how to comfort a woman, he was terrible at it, and looked at Merryl for help. His cat abandoned her playing with the fairy in favour of sitting at his shoulder, whispering in his ear.
"Just give her a hug... that's it, not too rough you idiot!"
Orpheo embraced her in a brotherly fashion, more concerned for her sadness than her words. Tried to kill him? It would not be the first time, and he was fairly confident this cult would not be so interested in him or Merryl. He was prefectly normal.
"You may gather your information, but I will not be killed so easily." He had faith in his own abilties in combat and hiding for that. Orpheus spoke over the top of her head, "Freedom has a price, Khailyn, what would your's be?"

Khailyn is slightly shocked by the hug, Orpheus didn't come across as the tactile sort. But she is glad of his sympathy and pleased that she hadn't angered him or his companion. She listens to his words, his defiance and self certainty... But Khai knows how ruthless the cult is, intolerant to all things ethereal.
Aaaah, her freedom, indeed the price was high. The cult would rather she be dead than risk her leaving, full of secrets and gossip, they simply wouldn't allow it! She smiles wearily at the soft pressure of Orpheus over head leaning onto her. At last she had the comfort of one who knew her dilemma. "I believe my price is death, Orpheus, there is no other way for me to leave the clutches of the cult..."

Orpheus pulled away from her, looking into her eyes and was deadly serious.
"Khailyn. There is a way. I intend to find it. You deserve more than servitude." He blushed a little, realising he had embraced her, but it was in comfort.
Merryl added, "Yeh if you teach Orpheus a spell or two." That seemed to carry significant meaning. "We'll get you sorted out."

Khailyn smiles up at the Elf, her face child-like and teary eyed. How would this one Elf find a way for her to leave the cult without his plan resulting in her death? It was madness but... wasn't it worth a try?
"That's sweet of you, but it may be more than you're life's worth. The cult, it's very powerful you see, they're not fond of what they call 'paranormal' but they have no problems with using it to their own advantage. The leader, he is master to a host of creatures you couldn't even imagine!" Khai nods erratically, apparently agreeing with her own words...
His familiar, Merryl, was encouraging magic again, but then, perhaps she had a point! "Fire with fire! We'll beat them at their own game!" Khai stands suddenly, knocking her chair back wards to land with an offending clatter in the stillness of the library. She rummages hastily through bits of loose paper and parchment. "Aha! Spells! Real old ones, in old, lost languages! There has to be something useful here, right??"

Orpheus nodded. Back in his home realm, he had commanded an army - mostly magic users to some degree or another. He was not frightened, even alone.
Khailyn seemed to go into some kind of frenzy, frantically searching through the parchment as if her life depended on it. Perhaps it did. Orpheus exchanged glance with Merryl, who licked his ear by way of reply. It tickled, but Orpheus did not laugh, instead picking her up and dropping her on his lap, where he idly stroked Merryl, observing Khailyn with his dark blue eyes.
"I'll give anything a go." He commented, "Anything of interest?"

Khailyn frowned at the little book she had picked up "No no no, this wont do" With these words she drops it and turns to the rows of books behind. A few scrolls were slotted in between them and it was these that held real spells, spells to do damage...
What was it Merryl had said? Becoming her rightful form would allow her to assist Orpheus better...? Yes, a spell for Merryl, but which kind? Transformation? Reversal? There was nothing here but elemental incantations and then of course there was the question, could Khailyn learn magic herself? In her frenzy she knocks a small, leather bound book from its hiding place... Inside, the pages tell of universal magic, spells to harness the ultimate power.
Khailyn hands her find to Orpheus with great excitement, her eyes flaring.

Orpheus took the book and flicked through it. He could not read the script, recognising some of the symbols as things he had used in his own magic, but this time twisted and stange.
Merryl mewled and indicated, "That one! With the fire!"
Orpheus scanned it, "How do you know? Khailyn, could you tell me what this one does? I'd rather not burn down the library through ignorance."
